JUNIOR PHILATELISTS ON THE INTERNET

Mourning Stamps

Stamps issued on occasions of national bereavement, either special issues printed in black (usually), or existing stamps having an added black border. The Courier Stadt brief Beforderung, a German local post, issued black stamps in mourning for the Emperor Wilhelm I and his son Friedrich III, both of whom died in 1888.  I have no image of this stamp. The first mourning stamps by a government postal administration were the US 2c stamps of 1861-66 honouring Andrew Jackson.
